Intern Program Reflection

Throughout the year, we offer multiple internship opportunities. Hear from past interns as they reflect on their time at ASR.

Rylee McGarrigle talks about her experience at ASR

My internship at ASR was an unforgettable experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an internship. The entire team is incredibly welcoming, creating a supportive, intern-friendly environment where every smiling face is genuinely appreciated. I discovered a new side of media production that I hadn't considered before and deeply appreciated it. I've learned that not only is it okay to make mistakes, but it's also an opportunity to grow. Before my internship at ASR, I wouldn't have dared to touch any equipment, but after being on sets, it now feels like second nature. I'm incredibly grateful to ASR for teaching me a wide range of foundational skills, like operating equipment, properly lighting a subject, editing content, and so much more. I'm excited to build on these skills as I move forward in my media career, bringing what I've learned at ASR to new projects and challenges.

My time at ASR Media Productions has been long and fruitful. It all started back in the summer of 2023, when I was fortunate enough to start my first internship with ASR. Back then I had no idea how a video production company even operated, so getting to see that experience firsthand was monumental in developing my skills throughout my final years of college. Now it's 2025, I am a senior in my final semester of college, and since I enjoyed my first internship at ASR Media so much, I decided to come back for another round, to further enhance my skills in the corporate video world.

At my second internship, things were pretty different. Over a year and a half had passed, and the company had changed quite a bit. New leadership, new members of the team, new intern bosses to answer to, and loads of new fancy equipment. Everything had evolved to the next stage of a media company's evolution. Because of this, I had many more opportunities to learn more advanced techniques when it came to shooting corporate video. The biggest of which being lighting. At my first internship the lighting setups were good, but simple. This time around, it seemed like every shoot we would try a new method of lighting the room we were in, and I could tell from firsthand experience, the setups the second time around were much more complicated and very pleasant to look at.

Lighting wasn’t the only new thing I experienced, I had quite a bit of time working on my camera work as well. I’ll be honest, I don’t know if I got as much experience in the actual field as I would have liked, most of it was practice around the office and on off hours during shoots, but I understand why that was the case. These shoots often required a level of trust in the camera operator that an unpaid intern unfortunately doesn’t have yet, which is understandable. Other than that I had plenty more experience honing my audio skills, as well as video editing, setting up interview shots, and trying to further connect with fellow team members whenever possible. All of which will be very helpful to me in the future.

My time at ASR Media has been very valuable, and I hope the people working at ASR see that value as well.

It would be an absolute pleasure to continue working with the team in some capacity after my second internship is complete. Right now I have secured a part time position working as a videographer at Blue Ridge Communications, and have also been seriously looking into wedding videography.

I can’t wait to see where my career path takes me, and even if I don’t eventually get that call back, I will still look back on my time at ASR Media Productions very fondly.
